LOS ANGELES, January 21, 2016 – Math and Science College Preparatory (MSCP) high school, part of the STEM Preparatory Schools network of charter public schools, was honored as Nonprofit of the Year at the Los Angeles Business Journal’s 2016 Latino Business Awards. The seventh annual Latino Business Awards are sponsored by the Los Angeles Business Journal and the Latin Business Association and recognize businesses and leaders within the Latino community that are setting the standard for excellence in Los Angeles. MSCP’s founder and CEO, Dr. Emilio Pack, was born and raised in Los Angeles after his mother emigrated from Cuba, and has spent two decades in public education. Before founding MSCP, he worked as a social worker, public school principal and administrator, and Director and Executive in Residence of the Institute of School Leadership and Administration at Loyola Marymount University.
“I’m honored to be recognized alongside so many outstanding companies and leaders representing the Latino community in Los Angeles,” said Dr. Pack. “At STEM Preparatory Schools, it’s our mission to not only to ensure that our students graduate college and career ready, but also to reverse the underrepresentation of minorities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. This award is a testament to the hard work of our entire staff who are passionate about preparing our students to be Los Angeles’ future leaders.”
This award is the latest in a series of accomplishments for STEM Preparatory Schools, which operates Crown Preparatory Academy, a charter middle school, and Math and Science College Preparatory charter high school in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles. The organization serves nearly 1,000 students in grades 5-12; 84% of enrolled students are Latino, and 96% of the student body qualify for free or reduced lunch based on socioeconomic status. In 2015, both Crown Preparatory Academy and Math and Science College Preparatory were each named Gold Ribbon Schools by the California Department of Education, an honor awarded to only 18 public schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The Latino Business Awards were held January 20, 2016 at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
